Now that I've covered who nearly fell and who wore dresses with pockets, it's time to talk about the actual films themselves I suppose. All across Chicago the gays have bleeding fingertips from the furious blogging and website surfing to find more, more, more articles devoted to why Brokeback should have won over Crash. Frankly I didn't see Brokeback (GASP!) but I will say this...
Capote should have won.
First...Crash is a terrible terrible movie. It reminded me of that show Race that was at Lookinglass a few years back...preaching to the choir. "Don't be racist" thanks, Crash. There are so many problems with that movie, but you are all intelligent people...so unlike the producers of Crash...I don't need to broadly and obviously tell you about things you already know and have heard a million times.
I hear Brokeback was good, and beautiful, but long. Most of the good reviews I've heard of it have been from people who really wanted to support the movie because of the subject matter...but not necessrarily the movie. I hear the book is very good, I remember reading that author a little in college and though I'm not very into Westerns which is her speciality, I remember that she was a very nice writer.
But while Grand Cany...er, Crash shoved Racism 101 in our faces, and Brokeback broke the mold...Capote was doing, like, EVERYTHING that all the other movies were doing...but with subtlety. I knew Brannen would like it (Brannen loves thrillers, murder cases, death row, whodunits...it's a little creepy) but I was surprised I liked it so much. I had sort of been putting it off thinking it might be a little bit of a yawner...not true.
So, in conclusion...Congratulations to Philip Seymour Hoffman and to March of the Penguins.
No congratulations to Crash...it was not the best movie of MY year.
And applause to Jon Stewart, I thought he was funny. I always thought Billy Crystal was funny too, but there is a different asthetic for humor now...is anyone else aware of that? Jon Stewarts dry, sometimes absurd, and witty humor didn't blend very well with most of the blinking doe eyed starlets...but we thought it was funny over at Jer's Oscar Shindig. Which, by the by, Brannen WON the Oscar ballot that night.
A few more notes:
-Lauren Bacall...or Sophia Loren...or whoever that slurring old lady was...too many martini's in the green room? Reminded me of "Gladiator!"
-I know she's a little annoying, but I liked what Reese said during her speech, mostly just cause it was actually June Carter Cash who said it and I like her. I want to see that movie.
-George Clooney, I get the gist of what you were saying...but you are all still wildly out of touch. I mean, I'm glad that the Academy gave Haddie McDaniel an Oscar six hundred years ago and then no other black woman until Halle Barry...but come on...I love the Oscars, a lot, but it's a room full of people applauding each other whose net worth could pay off the national debt...Out Of Touch.
-Keira Knightly nervously sitting next to Jack Nicholson...who, by the way, seems to have lost a little of his mojo...thanks a lot Clooney.
-Three-Six Mafia, hilarious. I was pulling for Dolly orginally, but whatever...the irony of an Oscars with the theme "Return to Glamour" producing a winner with a song called "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp" warmed my freezing heart.
-Garnerama, why can't I find a clip of this online anywhere? Someone help.
-The music playing during the speeches was a nice touch. But next year they shouldn't even have musicians, just some guy holding a gun to each winners head as they speak.
"...and I want to thank my mom, and my first acting teacher, and Jesus, and I just want to say that we are all filled with the special kind of undying love that my character portrays we just need to let it out, and also racism is bad, and so is aids, oh and thanks also to my..."
*click*
"That's all, thanks, goodnight everyone."
-Last thing about dresses, who/what do you think was hiding in Charlize Theron's shoulder bow?
Now, enough about the Snoretown Awards. Tomorrow I will post a blog I've been meaning to post for a very long time. I'm very excited about it. And so are you.

Okay, first, see Brokeback. Secon, everything you said about Crash, ditto. I didn't like it. I wouldn't have been heartbroken if Capote won, I loved it, but not as much as Brokeback.
Here's my thing, why is the Academy allowed to give out awards if they aren't made to see all the movies? Members are blatently saying they didn't see all the nominees. I just feel that is so wrong. Like Mr. Clooney says, art is subjective. No one will agree on "Best" anything.
I understand you can't make anyone see all movies. Especially since there are a bazillion members. But don't try to convince me that these are some sort of prestigious awards if you aren't going to look at every nominee fairly. This is a fashion show, a pep rally for celebrities.
I have Walk the Line. I loved it. You should come over and watch it with me.
I totally want to see Walk the Line, as does the Brannen...let's make a date.
And I Complee Agreetley...it's a popularity contest and a fashion parade, but thank god! If actual people wih talent were awarded it would be a yawnfest. But yes, it should be more fair and less of a pep rally, you know, like the Jeff Citations. (HA!)
i secretly wanted capote to win. crash is good...but not good enough...brokeback put me to sleep. i love your face and this post made me want to kiss you on the mouth.
